About product

Lifecolor Yellow FS33591 Matt

A saturated clean yellow is the hardest discipline a color palette offers a modeler. Yellow FS33591 Matt is a matte acrylic paint from the Italian brand Lifecolor, and its name carries both the mark of the degree of sheen and the number of the American Federal Standard color standard. It is precisely clean saturation that everything making the choice of a shade on a model different from a real machine comes down to.

How scale works with saturation

When people say a shade should be lighter on a model, they really mean two things at once: lightness and saturation. With muted tones such as grays and greens, lightness dominates. With a saturated yellow it is the other way round — a lighter yellow quickly slides into cream, while what is really missing is a reduction in saturation. On a real aircraft or vehicle a yellow area is always muted by dust, by reflections from the surroundings and by distance. On a model standing a short way from the eyes, nobody does that muting for you. That is why a saturated yellow straight from the bottle often looks garish, and the area it lies on looks larger than it really is. In small scales it pays to treat it rather as a signal color for markings and smaller areas; a large yellow field takes it unaltered only from 1:32 and larger.

How to work with it

  • A matte yellow with the Federal Standard number given in the name.
  • In small scales use it rather on markings and smaller areas than over the whole surface.
  • On a large area count on muting the saturation, not just on lightening.
  • Judge the result beside the neighboring muted tones, not on its own.
  • A matte surface visually flattens the yellow, which works in favor of the scale.

Who it is for

For modelers of aircraft, military vehicles and civilian machines who need a strong yellow for markings, warning elements or trainer schemes. It also suits as a component for shifting the warmer tones in a palette.

Keep out of the reach of children. When spraying, work in a well-ventilated space.

FAQ

On a real machine a yellow area is muted by dust, by reflections from the surroundings and by distance. A model stands a short way from the eyes, so none of that muting works and the shade reaches the eye at full saturation.

With yellow, lightening is the smaller part of the answer. A lighter yellow quickly slides into cream. What is really missing is a reduction in saturation, that is, a shift toward a more muted tone.

It is a reference to the American Federal Standard color standard, which the manufacturer gives right in the name of the shade. It serves as a guide when looking for a particular tone.

The larger the scale, the better. Roughly from 1:32 up, the eye has enough area to take in the transitions and the highlights, and a saturated yellow is not as conspicuous there as in 1:72.
