LP-42 Mica Red is a metallic red from the LP line by Tamiya. The fine particles in the paint give the surface a pearlescent sheen that changes with the angle of the incoming light, so on a curved surface the shade shifts from a dark to a bright red. It is most often used on the bodies of car models and anywhere the finish is meant to be rich and striking. Unlike a plain red, the shade does not look flat but holds the drawing of the shape even without shading.
The LP line are lacquer paints, not acrylics. They are thinned with the thinner for lacquer paints of the same system; water-based acrylic thinners and alcohol thinners do not belong here. Apply with an airbrush in several thin coats with a pause for drying between them. One heavy wet coat can attack the plastic underneath. Work in a well-ventilated area and with respiratory protection. Lacquer paints dry quickly, which helps the flow of work, but it leaves no chance to correct a fresh coat.
Metallic and pearlescent shades stand or fall with the surface underneath. Sand the area smooth beforehand and spray a base color, because every irregularity shows up more under a metallic than under a covering paint. Evenness matters more than perfect coverage: apply thin coats at the same speed of movement and keep checking the surface against the light. Try any combination with paints of another system on an offcut; lacquer can lift the layer underneath.
The paint alone is supplied. Thinner, brushes, clear varnish and the model are not included, unless stated otherwise.
