The widest tape in the AK interactive masking range: 18 mm wide, a 20 m roll, with a carrier of rice paper (the washi type). The paper can be torn by hand and also cut precisely with a knife. This is a modeling aid, not a kit.
Modeling tape differs from ordinary adhesive tape in three things that decide the result. Its tack is low and controlled, so no paint is pulled off and no primer is torn up when it comes away. The edge is cut sharp and once it is pressed down it works as a seal — paint does not creep under it and the transition is sharp. And the adhesive leaves no residue, so the surface does not have to be cleaned with thinner.
The eighteen is a tape for areas. With it you cover a wing, the side of a fuselage, a cab roof or the bed of a truck considerably faster than with narrow strips — and above all with fewer joints. Every joint between two strips of tape is a potential place for paint to force its way through; the fewer of them there are, the smaller the risk of a stain under the mask. For fine work, however, it is not the answer: a wide tape cannot manage arcs and curves, because it breaks and wrinkles in a bend — use the narrow 2 mm tape there, which can be shaped. For ordinary straight lines and medium-sized areas the universal 12 mm is more practical. A typical procedure: outline the shape with the narrow tape and fill the area behind it with this wide one.
For modelers who spray larger models with an airbrush — aircraft, vehicles, equipment in larger scales — and want to mask quickly and without paint creeping in at the joints between strips.
Press the edge of the tape down along its whole length, apply the paint in thin coats and pull it away slowly at an acute angle.
