Why a metallic behaves differently from an opaque paint

An opaque acrylic covers a surface with one value that you see the same from every side. A metallic paint lays a layer of fine reflective particles on it, and those return the light. A metal surface therefore looks a little different every time depending on the lighting. The reflective filler moreover sinks to the bottom of the bottle, so every paint in the set has to be stirred thoroughly before work and between coats.

How to work with the set

• Apply over a flat and uniform base; a grainy surface breaks up the reflection and the metal goes dull.
• A dark base gives metal depth, a light one brightens it, and with silver tones that difference is clearly visible.
• Build the shades from darker to lighter and leave the light tones only for edges and peaks.
• Put the metal shades at the end of the painting, as a metallic layer is harder to mask and to overspray.
• A wash does not work on metal as it does on matte paint: lead it into engraved lines in spots and draw the excess off at once, as over an area it would damp down the sheen.
