A set of tools for a modeling table

Building a model consists of several repeating operations: separate a part, clean it up, try it dry, glue it, sand it over and measure it. A set of tools brings the tools for this work together into one package, so you do not have to look for them one at a time. The exact make-up is given by the manufacturer on the packaging and it pays to compare it with what you already have on the table, so that you do not end up with the same tools twice.

Why a set pays off

The commonest reason a build gets stuck is not a lack of skill but a blunt blade and missing tweezers. A blunt edge tears and pushes plastic instead of cutting it, and the white nick that arises then has to be laboriously sanded away. A basic set solves this problem with a single purchase and suits a gift for a beginning modeler who does not yet know what they will need. The second advantage is that the tools stay together: what has a place of its own is not searched for under the table in the middle of a job.

Handling and maintenance

Use each tool only on the material it is intended for. Tools for plastic will be chipped irreparably by wire or hard metal. Always cut away from yourself and on a mat, not on the tabletop. Keep the edges and the jaws clean and dry, and after sanding wipe the dust off them with a brush. Store them dry, so that they do not start to rust, and do not let children near the tools unsupervised. Never leave blades lying with the edge upward.
