Eight shades of the postwar Royal Air Force: camouflage green and grays to the British Standard, a reconnaissance blue and the beige finish of patrol machines.
Responsibility details are not available.
The postwar Royal Air Force held its finishes firmly within the British Standard, which makes a modeler's work easier: every tone has its own standard number and can be looked up across types. The patterns themselves, however, changed. From the green and gray camouflage of combat machines through the highly visible finishes of trainers to the low-visibility grays of the end of the century, the equipment went through a series of transformations that are a rewarding subject on models to this day. The set is therefore usable across several generations of aircraft.
The selection begins with Dark Green, completed by Medium Sea Grey and Dark Sea Grey, that is the pair on which most postwar camouflage patterns rest. A special place belongs to PRU Blue, which was carried by photographic reconnaissance machines. Next comes Light Aircraft Grey and the camouflage gray of a barley tone, joined by a Dark Camouflage Grey. The eight is closed by the beige shade called Hemp, characteristic of large patrol machines.
The differences between the individual grays are deliberately subtle, which calls for good light during the work and ideally a test chart on an offcut. The recommended procedure goes from the lighter fields to the darker, because a dark tone covers any overspray more easily than the other way round. The Hemp shade on large areas reveals every unevenness of the surface, so before it it pays to spend time sanding and filling the joints. PRU Blue, by contrast, needs a light base, otherwise it darkens and loses its characteristic cast.
