Larch 180-220 mm — a mature Model Scene model tree

A model of a larch in summer green, 180 to 220 millimeters tall, from Model Scene. This is the largest size in the range — a mature tree that acts as a focal point on a layout or in a diorama and by itself sets the scale of the whole scene. Compared with a spruce the larch has an airier crown with lighter needles, so even at this size it does not read as a heavy green mass and lets the background or the buildings behind it come through.

Use and scales

• A height of 180-220 mm matches a tree roughly 16 to 19 meters tall in H0 scale (1:87).
• In TT scale (1:120) it is a tree about 21.5 to 26.5 meters tall, and in N scale (1:160) roughly 29 to 35 meters — a fully grown larch.
• In 1:35 scale it corresponds to roughly 6.5 to 7.5 meters, which suits a tree in the foreground of a military or civilian diorama.
• It proves itself as a solitary tree beside a farmstead, at the edge of a forest or above a railroad line, where it frames the scene naturally.

Installation tips

With a tree of this size firm anchoring is essential. Set the trunk into a deep hole in the base and glue it with PVA or from a hot glue gun; on a diorama that will be carried around it pays to back the joint up from underneath as well. Check that it stands upright from two directions, because on a tall tree any lean shows at once. Spread the crown out carefully after unpacking and let it straighten, so that the branches do not stay flattened. Hide the foot of the trunk with scatter, moss and static grass, and add several smaller trees around it — grading the sizes gives the stand depth.
