A handmade model of a larch in autumn color, 180 to 220 mm tall, from the manufacturer Model Scene. It is a finished tree, not a kit and not a loose material — once unpacked all it needs is planting into the base of a diorama. Because the trees are made by hand, each piece differs in the shape of its crown and in its exact height within the stated range, so no two identical trees end up side by side.
The larch is a conifer whose needles turn yellow in autumn and then fall — which is why the autumn version works with golden, ocher and rusty shades. Its growth is upright, with a fairly open, light-filled crown, and that is practical for a diorama: the tree does not block the scene behind it and reads as airy. A height of 180 to 220 mm corresponds in 1:35 scale to a tree roughly 6 to 8 meters tall, and in 1:48 scale to about 8.5 to 10.5 meters. For a railroad layout in the smaller scales it already represents a sturdy mature tree.
Drill a hole in the base to match the diameter of the trunk and plant the tree with PVA or cyanoacrylate glue. Hide the transition from trunk to terrain with static grass, fine undergrowth and a little leaf litter — this is precisely the detail that decides whether the tree looks planted in the diorama or stuck into it. In a group, combine different heights and do not plant the trees in a regular grid. You can pick the trunk out gently with a lighter shade using drybrushing, but it is better to leave the foliage alone. Protect the crown during transport — it is delicate.
