The paints of the Mr. Metal Color range differ from ordinary metallics in the way the final look comes about. Once applied, the surface looks flat and unremarkable; only when the coat has dried and you pass over it with a soft cloth, a cotton swab or a gloved finger do the metal particles line up in one direction and the surface lights up with a shine that cannot be mixed with a brush. How much shine you get is in your hands - the longer you buff, the more deeply the metal comes out.
The bronze tone suits anywhere the real subject used copper and tin alloys. Ship propellers, bearing housings, steam engine fittings, parts of historic guns, bells and decorative ironwork on building models all look more convincing in bronze than in an ordinary golden paint, because its tone is more muted and leans toward brown.
It goes on thinly, whether with an airbrush or a soft brush, and a heavy coat does the result more harm than good. The thinner is solvent-based, the same as for the other lacquer paints of this brand, and ventilation is needed while working.
A buffed surface is sensitive to fingerprints, so a finished part is held by its edges. A matte varnish over it swallows the shine again, so it is better not to put one on metal surfaces.
Buffing only starts once the surface has stopped being tacky to the touch. Anyone who hurries will smear the thin coat and will have to lay it down again. It works well to pass in one direction, because circular motion leaves small swirls that show up under sharp light.
