About product

Gold – gold acrylic metallic paint from Mr.Paint (17 ml)

A modeling paint, not a kit. The shade belongs to the Aqua range from the Slovak manufacturer Mr.Paint: it is an acrylic thinnable with water, not the lacquer (nitro) paint the brand became known for. The bottle holds 17 ml in a dropper bottle; the consistency is set so that the paint goes into an airbrush straight from the bottle. It is thinned with water or with the acrylic thinner of the same range, not with the lacquer one. It has no aggressive odor, so it can be used indoors.

Where you will use the gold

The gold is bright and leaning to yellow, the bold, precious metal. You will reach for it for gilded elements and ornaments, historical objects, dial faces and instruments, brass and gold fittings, figures and fantasy subjects. Do not confuse it with the copper of the same range: the gold is yellow and bright, the copper is reddish and noticeably darker. If you are building a historical ship, a boiler or copper piping, you want the copper, not the gold; for fittings, a picture frame or an ornamental element, the gold instead.

Working with metallic paint

  • The metal particles settle in the bottle, and without careful stirring you spray almost transparent binder and the gold shine never comes.
  • The gold is merciless to the surface underneath: sanding scratches and grain stand out in a metal finish, so apply it over a smoothly sanded, ideally gloss surface.
  • A metal layer is hard to overspray and to mask, as tape can lift it. Put it at the very end of the painting sequence and mask it gently.
  • A matte clear coat kills the gold effect and turns the metallic paint into a dull ocher area. If you are clear coating, count on it.

Who it is for

For modelers of historical subjects, ship builders, figure painters and fantasy modelers, wherever a convincing gold metal is needed and not just a yellow paint.

A modeling paint, it is not part of any kit. Ventilate the room and protect your airways when spraying with an airbrush. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

The gold is bright and leans to yellow, the typical precious metal for fittings, ornaments and instruments. The copper is reddish and markedly darker and belongs on copper piping, boilers, historical ships and patinated metal. Mixing them up shows at first glance.

Acrylic. The shade comes from the water-thinnable acrylic Aqua range and is thinned with water or with the acrylic thinner of the same range. The classic lacquer (nitro) range from Mr.Paint is a different product with different chemistry and a different thinner.

Most often for one of two reasons. Either the paint was not stirred enough and the metal pigment stayed at the bottom of the bottle, or the surface underneath was rough, as metallic paint needs a smooth, ideally gloss finish. A matte clear coat applied on top will kill the shine too.

The Aqua range is meant for brush and for airbrush. With metallic paints, though, an airbrush gives a more even metal surface, as brush strokes show more easily, so choose the brush for small details rather than for large areas.
