About product

The color

The designation RLM 77 Hellgrau refers to the German RLM aviation standard, which in the 1930s and 1940s assigned serial numbers to paint shades. The German Hellgrau means light gray. The light gray tones of this standard were used on aircraft both on large areas and on letters, numbers and codes.

How to apply the paint

Smooth the surface, wash it and degrease it, otherwise the paint will not hold well on greasy plastic. Stir the container before use and apply in several thin coats with a short pause between them. A light shade covers less well than a dark one, so it pays to even out the surface underneath so that filled seams and repaired spots do not show through. Thin it with the thinner intended for this paint line; the thinning ratio and the recommended procedure are given by the manufacturer in the instructions.

Painting tips

If you want to use the shade on markings and codes sprayed through a mask, thin the paint more and spray at a lower pressure from a shorter distance. The paint then will not creep under the edge of the mask and the letters will stay sharp. Apply the mask to a well-dried surface and peel it off soon after spraying, not after several days. On large light areas be sparing with the finishing work: choose a wash only slightly darker than the base and apply dust marks in layers, checking them from a distance.

Who it is for

For modelers of German aircraft who work with schemes to the RLM standard. Check which machine and period the shade belongs to against documentation or against the painting scheme in the kit. This is a single shade; thinner and other accessories are supplied separately, unless stated otherwise.

Light grays cover less well. On mottled plastic with filled seams the paint would build up unevenly and repaired spots would show through.
