Mushrooms are a rewarding element in small scale: they give a scene a sense of size, of damp and of the mood of the undergrowth, and yet they are very hard to make yourself so that the caps look thin and natural. This base brings them ready-made, as a relief of overgrown ground on which the mushrooms grow out of the earth and out of rotting wood.
The subject is aimed at fantasy settings where the figure is surrounded by forest or underground undergrowth, but it serves just as well under a fairy-tale or a historical figure out of doors. Before painting, try out where the figure will stand, so that the mushrooms stay visible and do not disappear behind its legs.
Cut off the excess material and the marks left by production with a sharp blade a little away from the part, and go carefully at the thin caps, which snap off easily. Level the underside so that the base does not rock, and wash and degrease the surface before painting. Cyanoacrylate glue will join the parts securely. Mushrooms benefit from being painted from the bottom up: a light base on the stem and a darker transition on the cap looks alive. Leave the forest floor darkest in the hollows and lighten the raised spots only gently, so that they stay damp. A little gloss on the caps gives the impression of fresh rain.
