This masking tape from Hobby 2000 belongs to the Precision line - the straight, precise tape on a paper backing. It is built for straight lines and sharp edges: it holds its shape, does not stretch and can be laid exactly along a panel, an edge or a dividing band. On a curve, though, it wrinkles and forms ripples - for rounded transitions Hobby 2000 has a second, completely different line, Masking Tape For Curves, which can be stretched into a curve. Most modelers keep both at home: Precision for straight runs, For Curves for bends. The roll holds 18 m. This is a modeling tool, not a kit.

Why not ordinary adhesive tape

Office or painter's tape has adhesive sized to hold. Modeling tape relies on the opposite - a low, controlled tack: it adheres enough for paint not to creep under it, but when removed it does not pull off the dry finish or the plastic. It also has a cleanly cut edge and leaves no adhesive residue when peeled off.

Use

• Straight dividing bands of multicolor camouflage and wider color transitions.
• Masking straight edges, panels and medium areas before spraying.
• A width of 4.5 mm covers more at once - fewer strips side by side, fewer places for paint to creep under.
• Bounding an area that you then fill in with paper or masking fluid.
• It stands up to acrylics, enamels and lacquers.

Work tip

Once laid, press the tape down firmly along the whole edge - an edge that has not seated is the most common cause of paint creeping under. Spray thin coats and peel it off slowly, at a sharp angle back over itself, not straight upward.

Who it is for

For modelers who spray multicolor schemes and want a reliably straight, crisply divided boundary. The 4.5 and 5 mm widths from this line are very close to each other - choosing between them is more about which one you have to hand than about any difference in the result.

An aid for masking while painting. It contains no paints, glue or model. Let the base color dry properly before masking; store the roll dry and out of direct sunlight.
