A Load-Bearing Beam 2.5 x 6.3 mm

The largest of the commonly offered solid sections in this group. Six and three tenths of a millimeter in height and two and a half in width give a profile that only bends under very hard pressure and works as a genuine load-bearing element in a build. It will carry a suspended roof or a longer overhang with no additional reinforcement.

Where a beam makes sense

• Ceiling beams, lintels and girders in models of buildings
• Supports and lattice elements of bridges, ramps and loading docks
• The rails of crane runways and the frames of machinery in a factory diorama
• A frame under large areas that a thinner profile would not hold flat

Because of the thickness of the material you work with a saw rather than a knife. Anyone needing a chamfered end for an angled brace saves work by drawing the angle with a pencil straight onto the white surface and finishing the face on a sanding block. The joints take load if the glue is genuinely allowed to penetrate the seam and the part does not move while it sets.

Converted, in 1:35 scale it comes out at roughly nine by twenty-two centimeters, which matches a proper ceiling beam; in 1:87 it is already a massive steel girder. For the scales of small vehicles this size is usually needlessly large.

The strip measures thirty-five centimeters and is sold one piece at a time. It takes paint and filler just as well as the plastic of an ordinary kit. If wood is to show on the visible side, the most comfortable way is to scribe the texture along the whole length before cutting it into individual parts.
