A white opaque polystyrene tube with an outside diameter of twelve point seven millimeters and a length of 35 centimeters. It is made of the same material as plastic kits, so it joins with ordinary cement for plastic and is easy to cut and sand. The hollow section is an advantage where the tube is meant to be seen from inside as well, or where something is to be slid into it.
Cut the tube with a saw while rotating it; the cut then stays square. A knife will not make a clean cut at this diameter. Level the edge after the cut with a file or a sanding stick. If the tube is to have a thin wall at a visible end, turn or sand it out from the inside with a round file. When bonding it to a curved surface, first sand the mating edge to the shape of the base, or the joint will not sit.
For a tank or a drum it pays to close the ends with a disc cut from sheet. That gives a closed shape that can then be dressed further with rims and riveting from thin strip.
When cutting, work with a sharp knife or a saw on a cutting mat and do not breathe in the sanding dust.
