A tube of white styrene, that is of the same material the parts of ordinary kits are molded from. That is its main advantage over metal. The joint is made with a solvent cement that softens the surfaces and welds them together, so a genuinely strong connection is created rather than a merely glued surface.
A diameter of just under five millimeters is rewarding for the funnels and vents of ship superstructures, for posts and tubular structures of buildings for dioramas, for the tanks and pipework of industrial scenes or for gun barrels of larger calibers in medium scales. Wherever a cavity should be visible at the end, it pays to reach for a tube rather than a solid rod.
Use a fine saw for the cut and turn the material slowly while cutting, so that the cut stays square. A knife is risky at this wall thickness, as it tends to slip and break through the wall. A needle file will level the burr inside and outside. The surface can be sanded, joints can be suggested by scribing, and a primer for plastic holds on it without further preparation.
Longer pieces can be warmed over a heat source and bent into a curve, but if overheated the wall shrinks. If you want to achieve a thin edge, thin the end from the inside with a tapered drill bit turned in your fingers. Let a glued part rest for at least a day before clear coating, because the solvent in the cement keeps working for a while and the surface could sink under the paint. It is a good idea to paint the inside of the tube matte black before fitting it into the model, because an empty cavity otherwise looks artificially shallow even after assembly.
