A U-shaped plastic profile

A modeling profile with a section shaped like the letter U, that is with a flat bottom and two upright walls. The profile is 3.2 mm high and 2.3 mm wide and the wall is 0.8 mm thick. The package holds one piece.

What the profile is good for

Profiles are the basic building material for making your own parts. The U shape will serve anywhere a girder, a frame, a guide rail or a border is needed: the structures of chassis and trailers, the frames of gates and doors, railings, roof girders, rails for sliding parts, stiffeners in dioramas, and the unobtrusive internal rib that stiffens a glued part from inside. The open section also works as a cover strip over the joint between two sheets.

How to work with the profile

Cut with a sharp blade or a fine saw. Support the profile while cutting and make the cut in several light passes rather than one hard one, otherwise the thin wall will be squeezed inward. Level the end after cutting with a file or abrasive paper on a flat surface. Transfer the measurement onto the part only after sanding, not before.

Building tips

Choose the glue to match the material of the profile: liquid cement for plastic dissolves the joint and holds best, while cyanoacrylate glue suits places where the profile is glued to another material. Before painting, degrease the surface and sand it with fine paper, as smooth plastic will not hold the paint otherwise. Glue longer runs against a steel rule so that the result stays straight. Keep the offcuts, as small pieces come in handy for stiffeners inside parts where they will not be seen.
