A resin casting of a canvas thrown over the turret of the German Pz.Kpfw. III medium tank, meant as an accessory to a finished model in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the tank. The canvas is cast with its sag, creases and fastenings, so the modeler is spared the laborious shaping of cloth from foil, paper or filler — a method in which it is hard to keep a convincing thickness of material.
The Pz.Kpfw. III was a German medium tank that went through a long series of development versions and changed both its armament and the thickness of its armor. The turret with its commander's cupola and the gun mantlet at the front is its most characteristic feature. Canvases were used by crews quite commonly: they protected the vision slots, the barrel and the superstructure from rain and dust during halts, served as shelter and carried equipment underneath during moves. In period photographs the silhouette of the vehicle therefore often does not match the clean shape of a technical drawing at all, which is exactly the effect this accessory creates on a model.
Wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap because of the mold release agent, cut the casting block off with a fine-bladed saw and level the surface with a file. Sand with your airways protected. Try the seating on the turret dry, sand the mating surfaces to the particular model if needed and glue with super glue. Apply a primer before painting. Tarpaulin comes alive on contrast: lighten the ridges of the creases with a dry brush, pull the hollows down with a dark wash and unify the whole with a light filter. A matte varnish knocks back the gloss of the resin, and fine dust pigments on the horizontal faces tie the canvas to the rest of the vehicle.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
