A set of three Real Colors shades for British fighters of the 1950s: Dark Green, Dark Sea Grey and PRU Blue.
Responsibility details are not available.
The postwar Royal Air Force fighter force kept a uniform appearance that is pleasantly predictable for a modeler: upper surfaces in a divided camouflage of Dark Green and Dark Sea Grey, undersides in a characteristic deep blue. This specification accompanied jets of the first and the second generation, from the earliest twin-engine types through swept-wing fighters to heavy interceptors. The set holds exactly these three shades, so the builder is spared looking up equivalents in conversion tables. The difference between Dark Green and Dark Sea Grey is in fact smaller than the names suggest, and on a model it only shows in diffuse daylight.
The combination covers the whole period in which the Royal Air Force was still getting used to jet propulsion and its machines still carried camouflage derived from wartime practice. The blue underside is not a mere addition: on a model it makes a large continuous surface that decides the overall impression, and its tone differs noticeably from the usual light blues. Anyone who replaces it with the first blue shade at hand gives up the most striking feature of the whole period.
The shades are mixed as direct matching tones, not as approximate substitutes, and are intended for application with an airbrush. They are thinned with the product of the same range; anyone who reaches for another make of thinner risks curdling the binder and a grainy surface. Application in thin coats with a short pause between passes is recommended, because the coverage is high and a heavy coat needlessly wipes out the fine surface detail. The model, the thinner and masking material are not included in the package.
