About product

Colors of the photographic reconnaissance of the Royal Air Force

Reconnaissance machines differed from combat ones in their finish as well. They had nothing to hide from a gunner behind them but from an observer who was looking for them against the sky or against the landscape, and that is why they received finishes you could not meet anywhere else in British aviation. The six in this set are put together precisely for them.

The most unusual is the pink, the overall finish of machines operating at low altitudes from 1940 right up to 1944 – at dusk and against cloud it disappears better than any gray. Against it stands the blue for machines working high up, in wide use from 1941 and used on the undersides of high-altitude day fighters as well. A medium gray covered the upper surfaces of those fighters from May 1943. The gray-green belongs in cockpits, where it was the British standard throughout the war.

Two less known variants

The set also contains the green shade of the early reconnaissance Spitfires converted from the first production examples and a rich blue for machines deployed in North Africa and the Far East, including reconnaissance Spitfires and Hurricanes.

Which machines the set is aimed at

The description of the contents refers to particular types: the early reconnaissance Spitfires from the first series, the version for photography from low altitudes, the high-altitude fighter variants from the middle of the war and the Hurricanes deployed for reconnaissance overseas. Anyone building one of these machines will find in the package all the tones needed, including those that do not occur in the usual sets of British colors.

It is a water-thinnable acrylic of the Red Line range, that is a paint that is both sprayed and brushed and calls for no special ventilation. The shades are put together so that a whole model including the interior can be finished with them without buying further bottles.

FAQ

Reconnaissance machines operating at low altitudes carried a light pink finish overall. Against cloud and in half-light it is less visible than gray, so it was deliberate camouflage, not an eccentricity.

Yes, it contains a gray-green interior shade that was the standard on British aircraft throughout the war. A model can therefore be finished without a further purchase.
