Five track workers repairing a track, with a hand cart, tools and ties. A set in a ratio of 1:87 that brings any stretch of line to life.
Responsibility details are not available.
Five men have set about repairing a track so that trains run smoothly over it again. A hand cart, tools and ties belong with the figures, that is exactly what a crew on the line cannot do without. Thanks to that the set makes not just a group of figures but a working scene that reads clearly.
Track gangs were among the most numerous trades on the railroad. They walked their allotted stretch, tamped the ties, tightened the joints, changed bent rails and in winter cleared the turnouts. They carried their tools on a light hand cart, which could be lifted off the rails in a moment when a train was coming. The model brings this everyday business back into a scene from which usually only the finished track is visible.
The figures are reduced to a ratio of 1:87, so they match the usual vehicles and buildings of a model railroad. They work best on a secondary track, at the throat of a station or on a stretch protected by a signal, where the work does not block traffic.
The scene gains in credibility when you add a few loosened ties set aside from the track and some spread ballast. Free space suits the area around the cart, so that it reads as an obstruction on the track; and the figures benefit from darker spattering on the bottoms of their trousers, because track work was never noted for cleanliness.
