About product

RAL 7021 Dunkelgrau (Panzergrau) – AFV, AK interactive acrylic paint

A flat water-based acrylic paint from the 3rd Generation Acrylics line, AFV series, intended for military vehicles. A bottle with a volume of 17 ml with a cap in the color of the shade. A water-thinnable, non-toxic formula with high pigmentation and covering power, suitable for the brush and the airbrush. This is a modeling paint, not a kit or a model.

The color

RAL 7021 Dunkelgrau, known among modelers as Panzergrau, was the basic shade of German armored vehicles up to 1943. At first it formed part of a two-color scheme; from 1940 it was used as the only covering color on the whole vehicle. In February 1943 it was replaced in the role of the basic shade by the dark yellow RAL 7028 Dunkelgelb, over which green and brown camouflage patches were then sprayed.

That sequence is exactly what decides the choice: if you are building early machines you need 7021; if you are building late ones you need 7028. Panzergrau therefore belongs on vehicles of the campaigns in Poland, France and the Balkans and of the start of the war on the Eastern Front. Dunkelgelb, by contrast, belongs on machines from 1943 onward. The changeover was not abrupt: vehicles were resprayed gradually and in the field, so photographs from 1943 show both states. Dunkelgelb itself then existed in several forms depending on the period and the maker.

Use

  • The basic shade of the hull and turret of German tanks and armored vehicles up to 1943.
  • Suited to artillery, prime movers and equipment in gray as well.
  • Thinned with water or acrylic thinner, applied with a brush and an airbrush in thin coats.
  • It pays to lift the dark gray by lightening the surfaces and picking out the edges, so the model does not look flat in scale.
  • Before applying decals, coat the area with a gloss varnish compatible with acrylics.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of early German armored vehicles of the Second World War. Anyone building machines from 1943 onward needs the dark yellow Dunkelgelb instead.

A water-based acrylic paint. Shake thoroughly before use. When airbrushing work in a well-ventilated space and do not inhale the mist. Keep out of the reach of children.
