Raw sienna is an oil paint for modelers in a tube with a volume of 20 ml. It is neither an acrylic nor an enamel - the binder is oil, and it thins and blends with odorless thinner or mineral spirits, not with water. The shade is an earthy brown with a markedly warm, orange-leaning undertone - the classic pigment that stands in for sun, dry soil and dust on a model. This is a modeling paint, not a kit.
Oil dries very slowly - easily over several days. That sounds like a drawback, but it is exactly the opposite: the paint stays workable for a long time, so it can be blended, softly feathered and gradually fine-tuned. Oil therefore does not serve as a covering coat but for glazes, weathering and effects.
Raw Sienna is warmer and lighter, with an orange cast - it belongs where you want to brighten and warm a surface. Raw Umber, by contrast, is darker and cooler - it belongs in shadow, in dirt and in depth. Ideally you have both: with sienna you lift the lights, with umber you sink the shadows. Only their combination gives earthy effects depth.
Work on a cured varnished surface - from that the excess can be blended and drawn off cleanly. First let a drop of the paint be drawn off on card or a paper towel: oil exudes binder, and without that step a greasy oil stain forms around the mark. Only then pick the paint up with a brush. Blend with a clean brush lightly moistened with thinner and work in thin layers - with oil it is always better to add than to take away.
For modelers of vehicles, aircraft, figures and dioramas who want a dusty, warm, sun-warmed setting. Together with raw umber it forms the basic earthy pair.
Safety: it thins with solvent thinners (mineral spirits, odorless thinner) - ventilate, protect your skin and eyes and keep out of the reach of children. Thinners are flammable, so do not work with them near an open flame. Thinner is not included in the package.
