Six shades for the carrier aircraft of the Royal Navy from the end of the Second World War to 2010. British BS381C codes on four of the colors, 17 ml each.
Responsibility details are not available.
After 1945 the Fleet Air Arm left the wartime variety behind and gradually settled on a dark gray upper surface with a light underside. It was in that combination that the Sea Fury, the Sea Hawk and the Scimitar flew, before naval aviation moved to overall dark finishes such as the Sea Harrier wore during operations in the South Atlantic. The six shades follow that period from the end of the war to the first decade of the new century, that is, practically the whole era of jet aircraft on British decks.
The package offers RAF Sky, Extra Dark Sea Grey to the British BS381C/640 standard, White FS 17875, Camouflage Grey, also known as Barley, to BS381C/626, Medium Sea Grey BS381C/637 and Dark Sea Grey BS381C/638. With postwar British equipment the BS codes are a more precise guide than conversion tables to American standards, because it was by them that the paints were actually mixed. Every bottle holds 17 ml.
The darkest of the grays belongs on the upper surfaces of the fuselage and the wings, the middle shade on the fins of later machines, and Barley Grey appears on training and support aircraft. The white also suits code numbers and warning markings, where it covers better than a decal alone. Salt air over a deck did the paint no good, so slight fading of the upper surfaces is appropriate in that environment.
The white will also serve as a base under large national markings, which would otherwise lose their intensity on a dark fuselage. It makes sense to let the last pass dry longer than with brighter colors, because a wide dark area reveals every unevenness in the application.
