A road crew at work in a ratio of 1:87: the foreman points the way, two men lean on shovels, another works with a pickaxe and one holds a jackhammer.
Responsibility details are not available.
The foreman points the way with his hand, one of the men treats himself to a break with a cold drink, two lean briefly on their shovels, another digs in with a pickaxe and the last holds a jackhammer. This is what an ordinary crew at a dug-up roadway looked like at a time when hand tools still only occasionally took turns with a machine.
The set is interesting in that half the figures are not working. A break, leaning on a handle and a pointing hand are poses that layouts lack more often than work itself. Thanks to them the scene looks like a stopped moment rather than a line of dummies set at the same angle.
A dug-up street is also a rewarding motif on a layout, because it legitimately explains an interrupted sidewalk, a heap of material, a barrier or a detour. It makes it possible to hide the place where a road ends at the edge of the board without that looking like unfinished work.
The man with the jackhammer determines where the scene will be loud. A free circle should be left around him, the other figures turn away from him and the foreman stands aside so that he can see the whole scene. Arranging them by noise works better than arranging them by symmetry.
On layouts of HO size, work is done to a scale of 1:87. A truck of the same size, signs and cones suit the crew, because the set itself offers neither tools nor traffic signs and concentrates on the figures.
A dug-up roadway holds the scene together in time as well. A road repair lasts a few days, so the scene does not read as a permanent state and can be rebuilt at another place on the board later without any awkwardness.
