Rolling Pin Cashmere — a texture roller with ornamental decoration

This roller does not belong among the stone and brick patterns. It carries a fine ornamental decoration in the spirit of cashmere textile patterning, which comes into its own everywhere you need a decorated surface rather than a building material: decorative bases, interior facings, printed fabric, carpets or wallpaper in a display case. The roller is a tool for repeated use; the compound in which the pattern stays is the only consumable item.

How to get sharp ornament

• Fine decoration takes only an even layer — roll the compound out between two strips of the same height.
• Treat both the roller and the surface with release agent; ornamental relief clogs very quickly.
• Press down gently and go in one pass. Heavy pressure crushes the fine lines.
• With polymer compounds the impression is fixed only by baking according to the compound maker's instructions; with self-hardening and epoxy compounds it is enough to let the surface cure.
• A mold can be taken from a cured impression and the pattern multiplied if you need several identical parts.

Painting the decoration

Ornament shows to advantage when it does not stay a single color. Spray a base coat, bring out the recesses with a thinned dark wash and lighten the raised lines with drybrushing or go over them with a contrasting color on a fine brush. If you are imitating fabric, avoid gloss — the eye reads a matte surface as textile and a glossy one as plastic.
