Rolling Pin Pavement 15mm — a roller with a sidewalk paving pattern

A sidewalk tends to be overlooked in an urban scene, and yet it is what holds the whole composition together: it separates the roadway from the building and gives the figures somewhere to stand. The roller impresses regularly laid slabs into rolled-out modeling compound, and it does so around its whole circumference, so the impressions can be joined into a strip of any length. The designation 15mm relates to the size of the pattern — the slabs are smaller than in the basic version of the motif.

How to get a finished sidewalk from an impression

• Roll the compound out to the same thickness over the whole area and make the impression in one pass.
• Run a cut along a ruler where the curb will be — a straight edge sets a sidewalk apart from the surrounding terrain better than any painting.
• Tilt a few slabs deliberately or sink them deeper; a settled sidewalk looks noticeably livelier than a perfect surface.
• Make the curb from a strip of compound laid against the edge before it cures.
• Into the soft surface a manhole cover, a drain grate or a wheel track can be pressed.

Painting and patina

Concrete and stone slabs take a cool gray base complemented by a hint of brown by the walls and streaks along the edges. A wash runs into the joints, drybrushing brings out the edges, and a fine pigment where dust gathers ties the area in with the rest of the diorama.
