The point of the range is that what appears on the surface is not just color but texture as well, a rougher, uneven surface such as genuinely corroded metal has. It is exactly this relief that sets a texture apart from an ordinary rust shade applied with a brush.
Corrosion is uneven, so the biggest mistake tends to be applying it over the whole area. Texture belongs where rust would really form: on lower edges, around welds, by rivets, under lifted paint, in places where water stands. Work in small areas and in thin coats, building up the rougher texture gradually; it can be applied with a brush, a spatula or a piece of sponge, and each tool gives the surface a different character. The result gains a great deal if it is then toned further: darker shades into the recesses, lighter ones with a dry brush onto the raised grain. The RED OXIDE RUST shade represents a richer, red-leaning stage of corrosion, and combining it with darker and lighter rust tones gives the surface a depth that a single shade never has.
