Shadow Soil is a texture from the Wargame Terrains line by AK interactive, in a package of 100 ml according to the name. It is applied directly to the base of a figure or to the surface of a small scene and once dry it holds the relief you give it with a tool.
A surface that asks for a patina
A broken-up surface is the ideal foundation for further modeling work. Dry brushing with a lighter tone draws out the edges and emphasizes the structure, while a darker tone applied into the recesses deepens the shadows instead. Pigments stay in every recess and can turn a uniform surface into terrain with believable grime and dust. That is exactly why it pays to leave the surface rather more broken up while applying the compound, as a smooth surface gives the emphasis that follows nothing to hold on to.
It suits modelers who do not take a base as a necessary formality but as part of the final impression. For gamers it is interesting because it can be worked quickly and in series, so a whole unit looks uniform. For collectors it is a simple way to give a display model terrain without the tedious mixing of a compound of their own.
Check the particular coloring with the manufacturer on the packaging. Before applying further coats it is advisable to try the procedure on a leftover piece of plastic.
