Spruce, height roughly 250 mm

A finished handmade scenery tree, not a kit. You get it assembled and painted and all it needs is anchoring into the base of a diorama or a layout. The size given in the name corresponds to a tree of around 250 mm. Because it is a free scenery element it is not tied to a single scale: in large modeling scales it represents a tree roughly nine meters tall, in smaller scales a mature spruce of around twenty meters.

The real subject

The Norway spruce is the most widespread conifer of Central Europe. It grows in a narrow conical shape with a straight continuous trunk, its branches are set in whorls and slightly drooping in maturity, and the crown is dark green and dense. In the shady closed canopy of a forest the lower branches die off and the trunk becomes bare, while in the open a spruce keeps its branching almost down to the ground. That is exactly how you tell where each piece belongs in a scene.

Placement tips

Drill a hole in the base, plant the trunk and secure it with cyanoacrylate or filler. Cover the root flare with filler, soil and a layer of conifer litter — the commonest mistake is a tree visibly stuck into a flat board. In a group, combine different heights and place the tallest pieces at the back, so that they do not hide the main motif. There is usually a minimum of undergrowth under a spruce; brown litter, stones and only thin tufts of grass suit here. The shade of the crown can be blended with the surrounding vegetation by a very fine dusting of pigment.
