A set of four paints for the machines that flew over Spain for Franco. It covers the early German camouflage system as well as the light underside of the fuselage.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Spanish Civil War was the first conflict in which German aviation appeared in a new coat. The volunteer formation sent to support the Nationalists began with biplanes and transport machines, but it was here that fighters first went into action which a few years later filled the sky over Europe. With them came a camouflage system made up of dark areas above and a light underside, which then held for the whole war.
Spray the light underside first and let it come a little way up the sides of the fuselage, where on machines of that time the transition was not made sharply. Then cover the upper surfaces with the second color over masking putty or over a raised paper template, so that the edge stays soft. Patterns from the end of the 1930s tended to have a hard division on the upper side, but on the sides the colors blended.
Machines serving in Spain were worn above average. Dusty airfields, strong sun and continuous operation left marks on the paint that are worth showing: worn spots at the wing root, oil running back from the engine and paint flown off the leading edges. These very details set a Spanish machine apart from a later, factory clean example.
