Four shades for the aircraft of the Spanish Republican Air Force of the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939.
Responsibility details are not available.
Between 1936 and 1939 the civil war put a remarkable mixture of machines into the air. The Republican side flew French and home-built types at first, but soon took over Soviet equipment: the Polikarpov I-15 biplane, which the Spanish called the Chato, the I-16 monoplane nicknamed the Mosca and the fast twin-engine SB bomber. Older examples of the most varied origins were added to them, and with them finishes that were far from uniform.
The package holds a protective green and a blue-gray undersurface color in the version used in the 1920s and 1930s, and also a sandy yellow and a matte red. The green with the blue-gray makes up the basic pair for the upper and lower surfaces, the sand appears on machines operating over the parched interior, and the red belongs to the stripes on the wings and on the rudder by which Republican aircraft are most easily recognized.
This is an acrylic with a lacquer binder, that is a thicker material than you know from water-thinnable ranges. It holds exceptionally firmly on a model, stands up to masking tape and to later washing, and dries to an even matte. For an airbrush it is thinned with the thinner of the same range; with a brush you work rather on smaller areas. It pays to split the coat into two thinner passes, because a single saturated layer will fill the relief.
The red in the set is not an addition but a key item. Republican machines carried broad bands across the wingtips and across the whole rudder, and it is precisely their shade that is most often exaggerated toward orange on models. Period emulsions also shifted the color, so on old photographs it looks darker than it really was. Apply it over a white base, otherwise the depth is lost.
