What the stencil is for

A stencil is a thin template with cut-outs that you hold against the surface of the model while spraying; the paint passes only through the cut-outs and an exact pattern stays on the surface. This is how repeating motifs and fine details are done, the kind that would be hard to draw by brush and would come out a little different every time. The 90 x 60 mm size is a medium one: it is easy to hold in the fingers or with tweezers and still covers a larger area than small hand-held stencils.

How to work with it

• let the surface dry completely, lay the stencil on and press it down as tightly as possible
• spray perpendicular, from close up and at low pressure, so that the paint does not run under the edge of the cut-out
• apply several thin passes instead of one heavy coat
• lift the stencil off while the paint is still fresh and wipe it at once
• for a softer transition hold the stencil a little above the surface

What to watch out for

The most common mistake is high pressure and too much paint at once, which leaves a blurred rim under the edge of the cut-out. The stencil also needs a flat area; on a strongly curved surface press it down in sections and spray in stages. The material of the stencil and the recommended way of cleaning it are stated by the manufacturer, so follow those instructions. Remove the paint residue gently so that the thin bridges between the cut-outs do not tear.
