Soft foam replaces classic track ballast under the ties. The strip measures 4.44 cm in width, it is 5 mm thick and there are 7.31 meters of it in the roll in one piece, so a long straight stretch of line can be laid out without a single join. The sides of the strip are beveled, so once it is covered with ballast the natural shape of an embankment arises.
The top of a table behaves as a resonating surface and the noise of wheels passes through the ties straight into it. A layer of foam between the track and the base breaks this transfer. A train then sounds quieter and deeper, which shows best on large areas, where there is nothing under the line but plywood.
Before laying, nothing has to be soaked or softened, as cork requires. The foam stays permanently pliable, it does not dry out and grow brittle in time, so after years it does not start to crack under a load. In height it follows on from cork as well as board underlays, so it can be added even to a layout in progress, where part of the line lies on a different material.
The most common way is glue intended for foam materials. Before it dries, the strip is held with pins or brads pushed into the base. In curves the roll is simply bent and there is no need to notch it; at turnouts the excess is cut off with scissors or a sharp knife. The track is then fastened straight onto the foam.
The package holds one roll. Track, ballast and glue are not part of it.
