Soil is the largest area of most dioramas and at the same time the one where a badly chosen tone shows most. Japan Medium Brown A12 FS30140 from the Italian maker Lifecolor is a mid brown with no pronounced red or orange shift, which is exactly the kind of shade that reads in scale as earth rather than as chocolate. The number in the name is a designation from the American Federal Standard color standard.
On a coarse ground, be it modeling compound, sifted sand, grit or texture paste, a mid brown plays the role of the starting layer onto which lighter dusts and darker recess washes come only later. The middle of the tonal range is where the work is easiest: you have room to go both up and down. On ruts left by tracks, on the edge of a ditch or on the lip of a sunken wheel it looks good even on its own.
A tip on texture: on coarse terrain every grainy bump shows. Apply the shade in a thin coat and leave the hollows dark, and the terrain gains depth before you reach for any further technique.
For builders of dioramas and vignettes who start terrain from the ground up and want a reliable mid brown base from which they can build in both directions.
Keep out of the reach of children and work in a well-ventilated room.
