The darkened position of the German dark yellow Dunkelgelb Deep Shade from the Lifecolor acrylic line belongs in the depths. Under the mudguards, between the wheels and into the engine louvers it brings a shadow that does not go black and does not kill the color of the vehicle.

Shadows are a harder task on a model than highlights. Use black and the surface goes dead; use brown and the vehicle starts to look as though it were covered in mud. The darkened position of the same shade gets round this problem: the shadow stays within the family of the base color, it only darkens, so the vehicle holds together even after shading.
It works most strongly where the light really cannot get in reality. Those are the grilles and louvers above the engine, the joints between armor plates, the space under the mudguards, the gaps between the road wheels, the area around the suspension and the depths between the teeth of the drive sprocket. It is in these places that the impression arises that the vehicle is assembled from pieces of metal and not cast from one material. A thin transition from the depth into the base tone does more than a sharp line, because a shadow in nature nowhere begins abruptly.
For the modeler who wants shadows under control and does not want to leave them to the chance of a wash. The ground plays a part here too: on a smooth glossy surface the dark tone stays rich and the transitions show more sharply, on a matte grainy surface it softens and merges more quickly. Check that in advance on a patch of surface and you will save yourself corrections in a place where the detail is already finished.
