The shipyard at Sasebo mixed its naval gray its own way, and the shade Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Grey from Lifecolor captures this local variant.
Responsibility details are not available.
The acrylic paint Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Grey belongs to the naval part of the Lifecolor range and corresponds to the naval gray of one of the four great naval arsenals of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Sasebo lay in the northwest of Kyushu, close to the straits leading to the continent, and was responsible for the building and the repair of a large part of the fleet.
The Imperial Japanese Navy did not receive its ship finishes from a single central source. The paints arose directly in the arsenals where the ships were built, fitted out and repaired, from locally available raw materials and according to local practice. The result is tones that differ slightly between Sasebo, Kure, Yokosuka and Maizuru; some look cooler and bluer, others go rather toward brown. The difference is fine, but it shows on a model, above all when two ships stand side by side or when a model is compared with a period photograph.
The practical consequence for choosing a shade
With Japanese ships the color is not chosen by class or by year, but by the arsenal that built the ship or last fitted it out. When that fact is known, the choice is unambiguous; when it is not known, a modeler reaches for the tone of the arsenal in whose area of responsibility the ship fell. On a large side surface it pays to apply the paint in thin coats and to watch the evenness against the light.
