Six colors of US naval aviation, from the dark blue of carrier machines of the 1940s to the vivid orange of conspicuous schemes.
Responsibility details are not available.
The palette follows three decades during which American carrier aviation moved from a uniform dark blue to the two-color contrast of gray and white, completed by prominent elements for good visibility.
The dark sea blue covered carrier machines overall from the end of 1944 until roughly 1955, that is the AD-1 to AD-4 types, the AF-2, the F9F in both forms, the F2H and the F7F. It was followed by the pair that held until the end of the 1970s: light gull gray on the upper surfaces and insignia white underneath, as worn by the Phantoms, Intruders, Corsairs, Tomcats, the reconnaissance RA-5, the anti-submarine S-3A and the Skyhawks and Crusaders. The helicopters of the same period had the seaplane gray, from which the SH-3 machines are excepted. The black played the role of anti-glare panels, and international orange covered early jet trainers overall and later appeared on the machines of training and search units.
The six make it possible to build a whole development line of the carrier aircraft of one era side by side. Anyone building a deck diorama will appreciate that the dark blue and the later pair of gray and white come from one range and behave the same way. The individual tones follow three successive regulations, so the package also shows how the Navy's view of camouflage gradually changed.
The orange and the white need a light base, otherwise the plastic shows through. Apply them therefore onto a cured base, thinly and in several coats; the boundary between the gray and the white on the fuselage will take a crisp transition.
