VIOLET, violet as a tool for colored shadows

Violet is not among the colors a model should carry over large areas, but it is one of the most effective tools for shading. A shadow mixed with violet stays colorful and alive, whereas a shadow darkened with black goes gray and deadens the surface. The difference shows most on the skin of miniatures, on white and light gray surfaces and on snow, where a cool violet cast looks natural. Its second use is with fantasy and historical subjects, where violet cloth appears routinely. Painters have used violet in shadows since time immemorial and modeling practice simply took the approach over. The metal tube holds 20 ml and the name of the range speaks of an acrylic paint.

When to reach for violet

• Colored shadows on the skin of miniatures instead of darkening with black
• Cool shadows on white and light gray surfaces
• A blue-violet cast in the shadows of snow and ice

• Knocking back an over-saturated yellow with its complementary tone

Who violet will help most

It aims above all at painters of figures and busts, whose work gains most from colored shading. A vehicle builder will use it too, though, as soon as he starts mixing shadows instead of merely darkening them. On large areas of a model violet has to be handled carefully, because it takes the attention immediately.

Dose really little of it onto the palette; violet overpowers the surrounding tones quickly. Close the tube right after use and do not leave it within the reach of children.
