The hardest thing about a darkly keyed figure is not the darkness itself but keeping a legible shape within it. That is precisely why the set does not reach for pure black. It offers the shades Tenebrous Grey, Wine Red, Reddish Grey and Grimy Grey, two neutral grays, one shifted toward red and one wine red. A black finish swallows detail and a figure merges into a silhouette on the table, whereas a gray with an admixture of color holds the shadow and at the same time lets armor, a cloak and fur be read.
The darkest gray suits the depths: under a cloak, between armor plates, into the joints between sections. The reddish tone serves for skin and textiles, because it returns a little warmth to an otherwise cold composition. The wine red handles the accents, the hem of a cloak, a hood, upholstery, a belt, and the grimy gray suits the edges and surfaces a figure rubs against most often. The differences between neighboring tones are deliberately small, so it pays to work on a dark base and to lay the lights sparingly.
The key suits cultists, dark knights, night riders and civilian figures in a wet cloak. The shades are mixable with one another and go together with other acrylics of the same line.
