A set of four shades for the Royal Air Force day fighter scheme introduced in August 1941. Suitable for the late Spitfire series, for Typhoons and for Tempests.
Responsibility details are not available.
In August 1941 the Royal Air Force abandoned the brown and green combination and moved to a pairing of green and gray on day fighters. The upper surfaces received Dark Green and Ocean Grey, the underside Medium Sea Grey and the additional areas a light greenish tone. In this finish Spitfires of the V, IX and XVI series, Typhoons and Tempests flew practically until the end of the war.
The four bottles correspond exactly to these four positions, so there is nothing to buy in addition and nothing left over. A volume of 17 ml is enough for several models in 1:48 scale; in larger scales expect two coats on the upper surfaces, because the dark green covers a little less well than the gray tones.
One point of interest belongs to the real machines: the first repainted aircraft received Ocean Grey mixed at unit level from leftover black and white. This improvisation was called Mixed Grey and was noticeably warmer and bluer than the factory tone. In period photographs the difference is visible and modelers sometimes imitate it deliberately with a slight shift of shade.
The material comes from the lacquer range, is supplied in a state suitable for the airbrush and dries to the touch in about a minute. You can manage the transitions freehand or with a rolled strip of modeling putty as a mask; the hard surface even takes tape being removed after several hours.
The additional areas deserve attention. The light greenish tone appeared on the underside, on the tail band and on the spinner, and its shade shifted several times during the war, so it pays to compare a photograph of the particular machine with the decal sheet you are using for the build.
