This is a modeling paint, not a kit. Tamiya X-12 Gold Leaf is a water-based acrylic paint in a jar of 23 ml. At Tamiya the letter X denotes the gloss line (matte shades carry XF), so the paint dries to a gloss surface. X-12 is a gold metallic — it contains fine metal particles that give it its characteristic sparkle and metallic cast.
It is thinned with Tamiya X-20A thinner and can be used with an airbrush and a brush. Compared with ordinary opaque shades, metallics have a coarser and heavier pigment that sinks quickly to the bottom — so stir the jar thoroughly and repeatedly, even during work, otherwise you will draw out only binder with no metal particles and the paint will lose its sheen. Metal particles are also harder to overspray and harder to overpaint: they tend to show through further coats and a metallic surface holds subsequent coats badly. That is why gold accents are usually applied as one of the last coats, or sealed with a clear coat once dry. For a brush, a thicker consistency and a smaller brush with a sharp point work well.
For modelers of ships, carriages and historic subjects, for figure painters and for anyone who needs a good gloss gold for detail. Given that a metallic is used mostly in spots, 23 ml goes a very long way.
The paint is flammable. Use in a well-ventilated area, protect your airways with a respirator when spraying with an airbrush and avoid contact with the eyes and skin. Keep out of the reach of children and close the jar carefully after use.
