About product

Tamiya XF-22 RLM Grey (Enamel) — matte enamel paint, 10 ml

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. A Tamiya enamel (synthetic, solvent-based) paint, 10 ml, with a matte finish (the XF designation). The abbreviation RLM refers to the German system of aircraft colors used during the Second World War; this shade is conventionally given as the equivalent of RLM 02 Grau — a dusty gray-green, not a pure neutral gray. Note: XF-22 also exists as an acrylic. This bottle is the ENAMEL and is thinned with X-20, not X-20A.

Where the color is used

The manufacturer recommends it above all for the interiors of German aircraft cockpits. In modeling practice a shade of this group also appears in wheel wells and on other internal surfaces of German Second World War aircraft; on some machines from the early part of the war it was used on external surfaces as well.

Use

  • Airbrush and brush. Stir the bottle thoroughly before use.
  • It is thinned with Tamiya X-20 enamel thinner (not with X-20A for acrylics). For spraying the manufacturer gives roughly 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint as a guide.
  • The matte finish is ideal for interiors — it makes no unwanted reflections and takes washes and a dry brush well for picking out details.
  • An enamel levels out beautifully under a brush, so it suits small cockpit parts even without an airbrush.
  • Use a gloss clear coat under decals (instrument panels, for instance) — on a matte finish the decal would silver. Choose a varnish compatible with enamels; the manufacturer warns that cellulose (lacquer) varnish should not be applied over an enamel.

Who the paint is for

For builders of German Second World War aircraft who need a reliable paint for cockpits and internal surfaces, and for modelers who can use a matte gray-green as a base for mixing or under weathering.

Safety: flammable liquid, irritates the respiratory tract. Work in a well-ventilated area and use respiratory protection when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children and away from sources of ignition.

FAQ

XF-22 RLM Grey is conventionally given as the equivalent of RLM 02 Grau — the gray-green shade used above all in the interiors of German aircraft.

An enamel — a synthetic solvent-based paint thinned with Tamiya X-20 thinner. The acrylic version of XF-22 is thinned with X-20A and is water-thinnable; they are two different products.

Yes, the manufacturer recommends it precisely for the interiors of German aircraft cockpits. The matte finish makes no reflections and holds washes and a dry brush well.

On a matte layer air stays trapped under the decal film and the decal silvers. A gloss clear coat smooths the surface; once the decals are on, you even the surface out again with a matte varnish.
