About product

Tamiya XF-53 Neutral Grey (Enamel), 10 ml

A modeling paint, not a kit. It is a synthetic Tamiya enamel (solvent-based) paint from the XF range, that is a matte one — the letters XF in Tamiya's designation mean a matte finish. The bottle holds 10 ml. Neutral Grey is a neutral gray with no pronounced color cast; the manufacturer lists it as suitable for the undersurfaces of American military aircraft.

Watch out for confusion: Tamiya carries the same shade numbers in the enamel and the acrylic range at the same time. This paint is an enamel — it is thinned with X-20 thinner (without the letter A). The acrylic version is thinned with X-20A. The thinners are not interchangeable.

Use

  • Undersurfaces of American military aircraft — a recommendation straight from the manufacturer.
  • Preshading — spraying darker lines into panel seams and along ribs before the main color, so the surface structure shows through once it is covered.
  • Shading and modulation — a neutral gray is ideal for darkening or toning down other shades without shifting them toward green or blue.
  • Gray areas of vehicles, interiors, accessories and a base under washes and pigments.
  • With an airbrush and with a brush. For spraying the manufacturer gives 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint; for preshading thin it further and spray at lower pressure in thin coats.
  • Apply a gloss clear interlayer under decals — otherwise a white veil (silvering) appears around the decal. Choose a varnish compatible with enamels; aggressive cellulose (lacquer) varnishes are not recommended over an enamel.

Who it is for

For aircraft modelers and builders of vehicles who need a universal matte neutral gray — both as a full covering shade and as a working color for preshading, shading and mixing. It is among the grays most often bought to restock a modeling workshop.

Safety: flammable. It irritates the respiratory tract — use only in well-ventilated spaces and use respiratory protection (a respirator) when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children. Protect from open flame and sources of ignition.

FAQ

An enamel (synthetic, solvent-based) one. It is thinned with Tamiya X-20 enamel thinner, not with X-20A — that is the thinner for the acrylic range. Tamiya offers the XF-53 shade as an acrylic too, so check which version you are buying.

The manufacturer lists it for the undersurfaces of American military aircraft. Beyond that it is a very versatile modeling gray — it suits preshading, shading and darkening other shades as well as gray areas of vehicles and interiors.

Thin the paint with X-20 thinner further than for ordinary spraying and airbrush thin lines into the panel seams and along the ribs at lower pressure. Once they are dry, lay the main shade over them in fine coats so that the darker lines show through slightly.

Yes, the XF range at Tamiya is matte. If you plan to use decals, first go over the area with a gloss clear coat so that no white veil forms under the decal, and once the decals are on, even the surface out with a matte varnish.
