Individual figures are easy to use on a layout, but nothing connects them to each other. A family is a different case: six figures that plainly belong together create action by themselves, whether they are waiting for a train, going on a visit or have just come back from a trip. The builder thus gets a scene, not just the material to build one.
The six figures have precisely defined roles that can be told from the figures themselves: an older married couple, a mother, a father and two children. Three generations together are rarer in the modeling range than groups of people of the same age, and yet it is precisely the difference in age that makes a line of people on a platform convincing. The figures are finished in color, so building the scene consists in setting them out and fixing them.
It comes off best when the set stays together but not in one row. The grandparents suit being seated on a bench, the parents standing a step further off with a piece of luggage, and the children placed to one side, because in a situation like this children never keep close to the adults. The distance between the little groups should be small but distinct, otherwise the family falls apart into chance passers-by. Anyone building the scene on a platform can add a suitcase or a bag set down on the ground; luggage between the figures is the simplest way of telling a viewer that the group is traveling somewhere. The same group suits the garden of a family house just as well, only without the luggage. There it helps instead to set the figures out around a table or at a gate, where visitors are saying goodbye.
