The model represents a work of the Czechoslovak heavy fortifications listed under the designation MJ-S 4 and the code name Zatacka. It comes from a series that ROP o.s. is building as a systematic collection of works of the border fortifications. It is not a conventional aircraft or vehicle kit but a model of a structure, sold as a single piece. The material, the number of parts and the dimensions are stated on the box.
One meter of the real structure corresponds to one millimeter on the model. A fortification work that looks like a massive concrete building in the field therefore fits onto an area of roughly a few square centimeters. That has two consequences. The first is that the model works mainly through its shape and silhouette, not through written-out detail. The second is that it is worth collecting several works at once, because only side by side do they show how the line was laid out and how the works differed in size and in the orientation of their embrasures.
Works of the heavy fortifications were built from the mid-1930s according to the uniform methodology of the Directorate of Fortification Works. The reinforced-concrete casemates had a thickened front wall, usually covered with earth, and their main weapons fired to the flank so as to cover the neighboring work. The designation is made up of the abbreviation of the construction sector, the serial number and the code name under which the work appeared both in the documentation and in the field.
Wash the model before painting and let it dry thoroughly. Concrete is best caught by a light gray base with irregular patches of a darker and a lighter tone. A very thin dark wash will bring out the embrasures and the edges. If you are mounting the model on a base, it helps to match the shade of the ground with the other works in the collection, so that the whole reads as one line and not as a set of separate pieces.
The model is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
