T-S 66b, code-named V poli, in 1:1000 scale (ROP o.s.)

A small model of one particular work of the border fortifications in 1:1000 scale. The letter suffix b in the designation tells apart a work with the same serial number within the same construction section, so this work and the work with the suffix a are two separate structures, not two versions of the same model. Anyone putting together a continuous section buys both. The contents of the package, the material and the number of parts are stated on the box.

The real subject

The subject is an infantry casemate, that is a reinforced concrete work of the heavy fortifications. Its form is given by its function: a compact angular block with the fighting rooms turned to the side, a thickened front wall sunk into the terrain and a gorge wall where the entrance is. In 1:1000 scale what carries over from the subject is mainly the proportions, the stepping of the masses and the ground plan.

Building and painting tips

In this scale the painting is the whole job. Degrease the model and spray it with a thin layer of gray primer, because a thick layer would fill in the fine edges. Do not mix concrete as one flat gray: lighten the base with a drop of white on exposed surfaces and conversely darken it where damp would collect. Apply a wash purposefully into the corners and at the foot of the work, and wipe the excess away. Finally a dusted pigment at the foot ties the work in with the terrain. If you are building both works with the number 66, paint them at the same time with the same mix, so that they hold together in a display case.
