About product

Yamaha YZR 500 (0WA8), Japanese championship 1989, GP500 class, 1:12 (Hasegawa)

A plastic kit of the Yamaha YZR 500 circuit racing motorcycle in 1:12 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. The boxing corresponds to the machine run in the 1989 season in the Japanese national road racing championship in the GP500 class, in the finish with the sponsor markings of a coffee brand. The internal code 0WA8 denotes the particular season specification of the factory machine. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the number of marking schemes are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The YZR 500 was a factory two-stroke 500 for the circuits, that is the type that defined the top class of road racing in the 1980s. The motorcycle was built on a light aluminum frame, a liquid-cooled two-stroke engine and an aggressive aerodynamic fairing. The factory machines differed from year to year in modifications to the frame, the exhaust system and the suspension settings, and the individual specifications were distinguished by internal codes. Besides the world championship, identical or only slightly modified machines were also run in the Japanese national series, which at that time had an exceptionally strong entry.

Building and painting tips

A racing motorcycle is built on the contrast between a polished fairing and a technically raw chassis. Finish the frame and the engine before you fit the fairing. The sponsor finish calls for a clean base, so apply a filler to the fairing and spray the light areas over a white undercoat. Lay the decals onto gloss clear with a softener, because the large areas have to follow the pressings. The exhaust bends of a two-stroke are imitated well by a combination of metallic shades with very fine heat discoloration near the cylinder heads. Brake lines and cable runs can be replaced with wire, which is very visible on a model with an exposed frame.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of circuit racing motorcycles in 1:12 scale
  • Anyone interested in the two-stroke era of the 500 cc class
  • Modelers who enjoy working with large sponsor decals
  • Builders of collections from the Japanese national championship

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the internal factory designation of a particular season specification of the racing machine. Factory motorcycles differed from year to year and the codes tell them apart.

Go by the decal sheet and the marking schemes in the box.

It is a model for the patient. The most work goes into a good finish on the fairing and the precise placing of the large sponsor decals.

The contents of the package, including any photo-etched parts, are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
