A set of waterslide decals in 1:144 for four named Lancasters of Canadian and British Bomber Command squadrons, including code letters.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Avro Lancaster was the backbone of the night campaign of Bomber Command and its roomy bomb bay carried a load no other European bomber could manage. Crews gave their machines names and accompanying artwork, which then recorded the number of completed operations with a growing row of bomb symbols.
Four such aircraft are covered here, three of them from Canadian squadrons operating within No. 6 Group:
The make-up of the sheet is therefore interesting historically as well: a British squadron with a long tradition stands beside Canadian units that took the Lancaster over only in the later part of the war.
The differences between the individual machines are not only in the lettering. Canadian-built Lancasters differed in their engines and in details of the fuselage, so the choice of subject will also affect which kit you pick for it. It pays to decide before painting.
In 1:144 scale the fuselage of the bomber measures only about fifteen centimeters, and that is why it is essential that the film does not lift at the edges. Prepare the surface glossy and smooth, transfer the decal with a damp brush and blot the remaining water off with a paper tissue. Settle the small code letters separately, so that the spacing between them stays faithful to the subject. Finally lock the whole surface with a matte coat, which suits a night bomber best of all.
