About product

Vacuum-formed cockpit glazing for the F-105D in 1:144 scale

This item is not an aircraft kit but an accessory set from the manufacturer Brengun. A vacuum-formed cockpit canopy comes about by drawing a thin transparent sheet over a mold, so it is noticeably thinner and optically cleaner than a part made by ordinary injection molding. In 1:144 scale, where a cockpit is only a few millimeters long, it is precisely the thickness of the glazing that is most visible. The set is intended for modifying a matching kit in this scale.

The real subject

The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was an American single-engine supersonic fighter-bomber from the 1950s. It was a large and heavy machine designed for fast flight at low altitude with a bomb bay in the fuselage and with the characteristic swept-forward leading edges of the air intakes in the wing roots. The single-seat version F-105D was given equipment for flight and attack in all weather and became the most numerously built variant of the type. The machines took a prominent part in the operations in Southeast Asia.

Tips for working it

Vacuum-formed parts are cut out with a margin of a few millimeters, and the outline is then sanded down with fine abrasive paper laid on a flat board. Proceed slowly and take the material away in small steps, trying the fit against the fuselage as you go. Before you start, you can polish the inside of the part with plastic polish and dip it in clear coat, so that the transparency is heightened. It is glued with glazing adhesive that does not fog, or with thin cyanoacrylate applied with the tip of a wire. Before spraying the frames, mask the glazing with thin tape or with liquid mask.

Who the accessory is for

  • Modelers who want thin and clear glazing in 1:144 scale
  • Those who plan an open cockpit with a visible interior
  • Builders whose original canopy has been damaged or clouded
  • More experienced modelers who dare to work with vacuum-formed sheet

The accessory is supplied unpainted and is not a standalone model. It is intended for modifying a matching kit in 1:144 scale.

FAQ

No, this is an accessory. The set contains replacement cockpit glazing and is intended for modifying a matching kit in 1:144 scale.

It is markedly thinner and clearer. In a small scale that is most visible and the cockpit looks more convincing, especially if you want to show it open.

Cut it out with a margin and sand the outline down gradually with fine abrasive paper. Glue it with glazing adhesive or with a tiny drop of thin cyanoacrylate.
